About this activity

Poon Hill Trek Overview

This is a ten-day vacation that includes a six-day circular hike along one of the easier trails in Nepal, making it well suited for families and first time trekkers who want to take in the stunning views of the Himalayas. The route offers great lodging, good food and does not bear the hassle of high altitudes. Even though May is particularly good for John’s view since he loves the Rhododendrons blooming on Poon Hill Trek, the trail can be trekked throughout the trekking seasons which extends from April to June and from September to November. We may not set particular dates in advance but we can organize this trip at the time you would prefer.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a round walk situated at the foothills of the Annapurna range in Nepal. The highlight of the trek is the breathtaking sunrise when viewed from the peak of Poon Hill, looking out into the heart of the famous Annapurna region. From this point one can see several noteworthy high peaks such as Annapurna south, Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Dhaulagiri, lamjung Himal, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhare and Manaslu all in the early angles of sunlight.

The trek through the region features lush rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and vibrant flora, enhanced by the hospitality of local Gurung and Magar communities. Ghorepani, a charming village at about 2,874 meters (9,429 feet) within the Annapurna Conservation Area, serves as a cozy waypoint on this memorable journey.
The Annapurna Sunrise Trek, renowned for the challenging Ulleri with over 3,000 stone steps, offers stunning views and culminates in a visit to soothing hot springs at Jhinu. The vibrant town of Pokhara, a five-hour drive from Kathmandu, provides a lively ending. This trek is a perfect mix of nature, culture, and adventure, showcasing the essence of Nepal’s mountainous landscapes.

If you wish to see a glimpse of the trek’s splendor, be sure to watch the captivating short film by the independent traveler and filmmaker vs Tibet, which beautifully portrays the essence and allure of this region.

Below are pivotal facets that render the Poon Hill Trek extraordinary:

  • Panoramic Vistas:A crowning jewel of the Poon Hill Trek is the awe-inspiring panoramic vista of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Ghandruk and Ghorepani stand out as notable villages where one can delve into the unique lifestyle of the indigenous populace.
  • Rhododendron Forests: The pathway is bedecked with verdant rhododendron forests, which burst into full bloom during the spring (March to April). Traversing these vibrant woodlands infuses a magical essence into the trekking experience.
  • Accessible and Concise Duration: In comparison to other treks within the Annapurna domain, the Poon Hill Trek is comparatively brief and less arduous, typically requiring 4 to 5 days to complete. This renders it an ideal selection for novices, families, or those constrained by time.
  • Diverse Terrains: The trek unveils an eclectic array of terrains, from terraced fields and dense woodlands to alpine meadows and towering mountain vistas. This variety ensures the trek remains engaging and visually gratifying.
  • Wildlife and Flora: The region teems with biodiversity. Trekkers might encounter an array of bird species, butterflies, and fauna. The flora is equally diverse, with various plants and trees enhancing the trail’s natural allure.
  • Warm Hospitality: The local teahouses and lodges along the route provide cozy accommodations and warm hospitality. This logistical ease obviates the need for trekkers to lug heavy camping equipment.
  • Physical Challenge: While the trek is deemed moderate, it still proffers a commendable physical challenge with its ascents and descents, imparting a profound sense of accomplishment upon completion.

The best time to trek the Poon Hill Trek is during the following two periods:

  1. Autumn (September to November):
    • Weather: This is considered the best time for trekking in Nepal. The weather is usually clear, offering stunning views of the mountains.
    • Temperature: The temperatures are moderate, making it comfortable for trekking during the day and cool but not too cold at night.
    • Scenery: The post-monsoon period ensures lush greenery and clear skies, providing excellent photographic opportunities.
  2. Spring (March to May):
    • Weather: The weather is generally stable with warmer temperatures compared to autumn.
    • Flora: This is the blooming season for rhododendrons and other wildflowers, turning the trails into a colorful paradise.
    • Views: The views are still clear, especially in the early part of the season, although there can be some haze towards the end of May.

Other Considerations

  • Winter (December to February): While the skies can be very clear, making for beautiful mountain views, the temperatures can be quite cold, especially at higher altitudes. Some trekkers enjoy the quiet trails and snow-covered landscapes during this time, but proper gear is essential.
  • Monsoon (June to August): This period is generally not recommended for trekking due to heavy rainfall, which can make the trails slippery and leech-infested. The mountains are often obscured by clouds, and there is a higher risk of landslides.

The insurance should cover trekking up to 3,210 meters, as well as medical emergencies, accidents, trip cancellations, and emergency evacuations (like helicopter rescues). Make sure your policy is appropriate for trekking activities in Nepal.

You can do the Poon Hill Trek independently, as the trails are well-marked, and it's a popular route. However, hiring a licensed guide offers several benefits, such as local insights, navigation assistance, and help with permits. Guides can also enhance your trekking experience by sharing information about the culture, environment, and local communities. Plus, having a guide ensures added safety and support in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
